Data Receiving and Processing

NOAA AVHRR Receiving System

The NOAA AVHRR data are being archived since October 1997 in the Geoinformatics Center. Every day,6-8 scenes are received by the system and size of each Level-0 scene is 100-200 MB.

The equipment was purchased from Dundee Satellite Systems Ltds, UK. The system consist of the following:

  • 1.8 meters Diameter Antenna
  • Motor Control Unit
  • HRPT Receiver
  • GPS Receiver (Trimble Acutime-II) for precise time scheduling.
  • Tracking System (Pentium-150 Mhz) for antenna tracking system
  • Ingest Workstation (Sun Station 5) for data ingestion system

Near-Real Time Automatic Processing System for NOAA AVHRR products

Once the NOAA AVHRR data is received by the receiving system, it will be converted by the ingest system from raw to Level0 format. The data will be sent to PaNDA system for radiometric and geometric correction, which the output format will be Level 1(NRA) and Level 1.5(QRA), respectively. These formats will be used as input data to the GAVICS system for atmospheric correction(Level 2) and image mosaic(Level 3). Finally, 10-day composite image will be generated which are Normal Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) and Sea Surface Temperature(SST) of South Asian and South-East Asian regions. This processing system is the collaboration between Geoinformatics Center, Hirosaki University and Iwate University of Japan.

The processing system for data received in Geoinformatics Center was also developed in the Yasuoka Laboratory to strenghen the research and data providing of NOAA AVHRR.

NOAA AVHRR Data Archiving and Transferring

NOAA AVHRR of Level 0 were stored into 8mm tapes since 1997. Nowadays, the data are storing to Archiving System, and sending through the high-speed internet to Yasuoka Laboratory at Institute of Industrial Sciences, University of Tokyo for research collaboration and data distribution.
